Companion Sciences was started after Dr. Nicole and Tom Gerbe lost their cat to severe anemia, caused by human anemia treatment.  There is no FDA approved treatment for anemia in pets, so drugs intended for humans are commonly used.  They teamed up with Dr. Pete Schatz, an expert in anemia drug development, and scraped up enough capital to set up shop in a small, state of the art lab in Silicon Valley. 

Months later, the team have discovered molecular structures that could be developed into a safe and effective anemia treatment for cats and dogs.  This breakthrough sets the stage for cell based studies, and eventually verifying safety and efficacy in animals for FDA approval.
